I am a pig *snort snort*
Since my pregnancy, I've gained a total of 20kg. Horrors!!! I hope I'll be able to lose the whole lot.
Since my pregnancy, Hubby has gained a total of 10kg. Which is good, since he was too skinny before that. All thanks to the rigours of teaching students who make him want to pull his hair out.
What is not good, is that I am 'entitled' to cravings and greediness at this point in time. Hubby, however, has 'strange' cravings that make him want to pig out as well. Sometimes this pregnant woman has to accompany him to satisfy his cravings, instead of the other way round.

He also eats into my stash of tid-bits, fruit juice and other trash food like canned lychees. Which leaves my cravings unfulfilled at times.
Haha! I think it's just an excuse for Hubby to pig out. He keeps reiterating that he is 'showing support' to me by being gluttony together with me ;) Interestingly, yesterday's ST Mind Your Body supplement had an article saying that people tend to eat as much as the person they are having the meal with.
Last night we went for dinner after our final gynae visit. It's like the proverbial Last Supper for me! Only confinement food after Boy Boy is out. So we sought out a Pizza Hut branch to try its new Pasta Perfetto.
Verdict: don't bother. Starting at $5.90 for plain pasta with veggies, the portions weren't even enough to fill our stomachs even with an added soup (which was watery) and drink.
So I ended up buying KFC home for supper. Finished off 2 pieces of chicken, a coleslaw, a mashed potato and a regular iced lemon tea all by myself. And I didn't even feel over-full.
And for breakfast this morning, I bought a huge slab of kaya cake, a huge slab of walnut cake, and a mini round pandan chiffon cake. Just because I felt like eating them. Don't care! Haha! Of course I managed to only consume the 1st item.
This is me at Ikea, pigging out on its chicken wings. Still lose to KFC.

My ET t-shirt has been with my throughout this pregnancy, being the only piece of clothing that can really stretch, is loose enough, and thin enough for me who's sweating like a pig. It has collected many 'battle scars', a record of how much I've been eating all this while.
My elder sis is always amused when she sees me wearing this tee. It looks like ET is pregnant!

Happening night at Desker Rd
Finally, my dim sum craving was fulfilled! After about a month ;)
Unlike the usual scenario where the hubby goes out in the middle of the night to satisfy his wife's food craving, Hubby needs his 'beauty sleep' or he can't function the next day. And that's why I end up 'postponing' my cravings. Haha, maybe the craving is not that desperate if it can be postponed in the first place.
Anyway, we ended up at
Swee Choon on Jalan Besar Rd, where the food is cheap ($1 to $2+) and quite special. Although the variety is not wide, but I think the price is quite important in dim sum, else usually the bill can come to quite high. The two of us ordered until we exploded, and the bill was under $30.

Don't know if it's a case of 乐极生悲... We left the cafe very satisfied and shiok, but a few minutes later had a bad experience :(
----------------------------------
To whom it may concern,
I am writing in to complain about the unsafe driving of taxi number SHA301G.
I am currently more than 9 months pregnant. On the night of Saturday, 8 August, I was waiting with my husband to cross the small lane at the junction of Desker Road and Jalan Besar.
Due to my condition, we were very careful to make sure that vehicles parallel-parked on both sides were stationery before we stepped onto the road. The time was about 8.40pm, and the area was brightly lit because it was just in front of a bustling coffeeshop.
However, before we could cross, the taxi on our right suddenly reversed and rammed into the right side of my body. It then continued to drive out of the lot and away, without even stopping to check on me. Through the rear windscreen we could see the driver gesturing and chatting away with his passenger.
The driver had obviously not checked his rear view mirror before reversing. He was also totally unaware that he had hit someone. If he had checked, it was impossible to miss the two of us, as we had been standing there for at least a minute while waiting for passing traffic to clear.
I was fortunate that the impact threw me against my husband instead of onto the ground, cushioning the blow somewhat. Fellow pedestrians and some patrons at the coffeeshop witnessed the incident and were equally appalled. They agreed with us that the driver did not look before reversing.
The impact has aggravated my existing backache. I am also closely monitoring my baby's condition and reserve the right to hold the driver responsible if anything happens. I hope City Cab can take the relevant action against this driver and ensure that he is careful and does not endanger other lives again.
I look forward to your reply. Thank you.
Yours sincerely.

The Line @ Shangri-la Hotel
Last night we had dinner there to celebrate my FIL's birthday. The buffet was a good deal because you get a discount equivalent to the age of the birthday boy/girl. We paid only about $25 per pax when the actual cost was $65!

The food range was very wide:
- Indian --> prata, murtabak, tandoori, saffron rice, dhaal yum yum!
- Malay --> satay
- Chinese --> dim sum, usual zi char dishes
- Western --> salad bar, lobster bisque, fresh pasta, ravioli, cous cous, potato gratin, pizza
- Japanese --> fresh sashimi off the block, soba, sushi
- seafood --> crayfish, crabs, prawns, mussells, scallops
- local --> noodle bar with wantan / lasksa / prawn / bak chor mee
- dessert --> lots of cakes, jellies, ice-cream, sherbet, fruits, chocolates.
First time I ate til I
REALLY felt like exploding. So worried the food would be expelled from my mouth like the Exorcist haha! I was so full I couldn't sleep properly last night and couldn't have breakfast this morning.
But what I really want to highlight is the wonderful service we got from an Indian serving staff. I couldn't read his name tag cos the lighting was so dim; he seems to be one of the more gung-ho staff around.
We were given a form to fill so as to claim the birthday promotion price. I was just telling Hubby that they expect us to bite our finger and write with blood, when this waiter popped up and passed us a pen. Later he returned with a cushion for me to put behind my back, and said he knows from his wife's experience that pregnant women need it.
At the end of the meal, the 'Birthday Baby', as they called my FIL, was given a mini birthday cake with lit candle. We were all taken by surprise at the gesture. The cake was also very good; strong bitter chocolate mouse! Not cheapo stuff.
So overall, I'm very impressed by the place. Just that for the usual price, I wouldn't bear to eat there :(

Tang!
Found this at Meidi-ya! Yeh!!!
Don't remember the packaging looking like this, or coming from Thailand, but it sure tastes the same :)

Rice dumplings
Oops, forgot to post this.
Yum yum!!! My staple for every 端午节. My mum buys them from the Singapore Buddhist Lodge every year, lovingly handmade by the old women volunteers.
Full of 'gao3 lak4', 莲子, mushrooms and mock meat.

买东西,吃东西!
Ok, more of 吃东西!

Quality moments with my MIL--- both of us are greedy to try foods and take theme park rides :)
We went twice on every ride. I was feeling queasy after my first time on the free-fall one, but she was actually keen to go again! Haiyoh!

Happy Realm Vegetarian Restaurant @ Pearl's Centre
This is a place my family have been patronising since I was young. The food is nice and cheap, but because it's more home-cooked style (aka not glam) its business isn't that good. But if you get past the presentation of the place/food, it's worth going back again and again.

'Porkribs' made of tau-kee.

Sweet and sour fish made of tau-kee wrapped with seaweed.

Claypot toufu.

Hokkien mee.

Tau-kee balls with vege.

This day we didn't eat our usual satay, sharks fin soup and sizzling toufu. Next time upload :)

Imperial Herbal Restaurant @ Vivocity
Visited this restaurant with some girlfriends a few weeks back when we met up for a long-due catch-up session. We spent about 20 minutes wandering around Vivo but every eating place seemed either unappetizing or too expensive. So we ended up at Imperial Herbal as we felt all of us deserved some tonics haha!
But... ended up paying $60 per pax :((( Heart pain!!!
The dishes were interesting, but not worth so much I felt.
The horrible seats that totally did not match its corporate identity. A case of trying too hard to pander to the youth crowd?

My favourite dish, scallop on potato cup! Yum yum. Sweet and crunchy.

My friends ordered Buddha Jump Over The Wall with sharks fin although I tried to suggest otherwise :(

I ordered the fish soup with longans.

Pork chop with herbal sauce. Sounds gross, but tasted really unique! Not bad. The herbs masked the raw smell I dislike in pork. I seldom eat such big pieces of pork nowadays, usually just the minced ones in wantan. Trying to cut down on pork, if not cut out totally.

The default delicacy, abalone with vege. I never particularly liked abalone, so this was just ok for me.

Tofu with 2 types of mushrooms. Too small a serving to split amongst two persons, so I couldn't really get a good taste of it. Zannen desu ne!

Fried mian xian. Tasted nice, but I guess some zichar stalls can do the same ;) I was actually game for their famous ee-fu noodles but the rest weren't so keen on it.

For dessert we had a strange jelly made with herbs. Didn't look very special... didn't taste very special at first... but it was so addictive that we wanted more! Practically slides down the throat and had a strange taste we couldn't pinpoint.

All in all, it was nice to try out their dishes, but I don't think I'll go back again due to the price tag.

If Ping can cook, so can you! (2)
More yummy (haha) concoctions!
Noodles in Clam Chowder with Italian SpicesThrew my leftover spaghetti and vermicelli into a can of Campbell soup for my home-alone lunch. I love brussels sprout but can seldom find them, especially in NTUC supermarkets where I usually do my grocery shopping. So grabbed a big pack of this when I saw them at Carrefour!

Hubby's rating: ---
My rating: 5/5 (Everything i like!!! :89~ )
Curry Maggi Mee with Fried Dory FilletThis is quite a cheat haha, cos the Dory fillet was bought ready-made from Carrefour. Added mushrooms, dou miao and egg for a quick 5-minute dinner.

Hubby's rating: 3.5 / 5 (Cos fillet was too black [not my pasar!] )
My rating: 4/5 (Deep fried! Curry! Noodles! Mmmmmm.)
I think curry maggi mee is the epitome of instant noodle! Maggi came up with a healthier no-MSG version which has replaced the old version in many supermarkets. As much as I prefer healthier food, this new version totally has no kick! Tried it once and was sorely disappointed. Now I've joined the hoards of die-hard fans who wipe out the stocks... I've been to places where the shelves for this version was totally empty, whereas those of the other flavours/versions were filled.
Ping's Back-to-Reservist FeastHubby started his 3-week reservist today, so I decided to cook a few dishes to provide ample nutrition!
Dish 1:
Baked Salmon with Butter, Mint and CheeseThink I should have grilled the fish skin faced down first before baking, so it'll be crispy.

Hubby's rating: 3.5 / 5 (Didn't like the mint taste)
My rating: 3.5 / 5 (Too salty!)
Dish 2:
Asparagus, Brinjal and Mushrooms in Garlic and Miso SauceMy own invention, luckily the tastes didn't clash!

Hubby's rating: 3 / 5 (Not salty enough)
My rating: 4 / 5 (Just salty enough + yummy miso + lots of nutrients)
Dish 3:
Winter Melon Soup with ScallopsStewed this for 3 hours!

Hubby's rating: 3.5 / 5 (A little too plain )
My rating: 3 / 5 (Too plain + fishy scallops)
Overall ratingHubby: 3.5 / 5
Me: 4 / 5

If Ping can cook, so can you!
Since I'm home most of the time now, I try to experiment with new dishes at least once a week. Got into the habit of buying recipe books as they look so appetizing, but somehow I can't select a recipe to follow as they seem to require new ingredients which I have to buy, often in large packets that take forever to use up.
So I've taken to using my creative 'powers' in whipping up sustenance for my husband, who luckily doesn't mind being my guinea pig! Inspired by my friend Serkin's blog posts, here are some of my recent dishes that I think are not bad ;)
Cheese Orzo with MeatballsDiscovered this type of Italian pasta when I browsed the bargain shelves in Cold Storage. Since it was on sale for near expiry, I decided to give it a try. It's like rice, but made of pasta material! Tastes a bit like Risotto when cooked.

Followed the recipe on the back of the box, substituting minced chicken for beef. Spinach and carrot were sliced finely and dissolved into the cheese gravy. Thank god for ready-made chicken stock!

Hubby's rating: 2/5 (Too cheesy so got jerlat quickly)
My rating: 4/5 (I love cheese!)
Japanese Corokke with Egg and Minced MeatMade this after watching it done on a Taiwanese cooking programme, but it didn't turn out as ideal as I wanted cos I scrimped on what I thought were unimportant steps. For one, I didn't mix butter into the potato mixture as I forgot to buy any. Also, I used only one egg instead of two for the coating under the breadcrumbs. These caused the filling to start breaking apart once I sliced the corokke open.

Apart from that, I think it was quite authentic!
Hubby's rating: 4/5
My rating: 4.5/5 (It's deep-fried!)
Karaage Curry RiceWhich means Japanese curry rice with deep-fried chicken nuggets. I like Japanese curry because it's sweet rather than spicy, but still it could have more kick. I already bought the spiciest version available :p It's available at NTUC for $3.40. Half a packet was enough to feed two for one meal.

Hubby's rating: 3.5/5
My rating: 4/5 (It's curry! It's deep-fried!)
Sweet and Sour Chicken with RiceHubby requested for something with a strong taste ;) My saviour:

Made my own chicken nuggets with chicken fillets and breadcrumbs. Add large onion slices and canned pineapple cubes, woila! Sorry for bad pics :p

Hubby's rating: 5/5 (Hahahaha... it's 'proper' food)
My rating: 4/5 (Ok lah. The chicken could be more tender.)
Seafood Platter SpaghettiCooked this for lunch today. Two types of pasta with battered calamari, fish fingers and chicken nuggets (not seafood but I needed to use it up hee hee). Used a bottle of ready-made tomato sauce but I blended and added 4 tomatoes and half a box of dou miao into it. Super nutritious gravy! Although red sauce + green blend = brownish gravy, a bit gross-looking.

Hubby's rating: 3.5/5
My rating: 2.5/5 (Battered stuff were not deep-fried well, soaked in oil!)
Nevermind. My cooking skills will improve with practice. Ganbatte!!!
