This song is quite old, but only after checking out their MTV then i realise why the dance moves have caught on all over the world. Got clapping! Haha.
I like the story in the MTV, esp the toilet part ;) Can't believe they splash so much $$$ on the MTV costumes and sets.
Wanted to put this up for some time, but kept forgetting.
I think this Filipina girl is great! Pint-sized but what a powerhouse. And she sings with so much soul. Not even 18 yrs old yet :s
And the song is so true.
This is her at 9 yrs old. Aiyoh, so cao4 lao3. But maybe in Phillipines it's like this. Sounds so strange, the same voice but doesn't seem like it was coming from this little girl.
Haha yes, yes, I'm going to gush about my favourite talent quest 星光大道 again. Been wanting to share this with you but kept forgetting. This guy is from the previous season (Season 4) of the competition. He won 1st runner-up but it was a really close fight.
I love his voice! He's only 21 :O
This is his first appearance as a PK 踢馆 contestant on Season 3, brought in to challenge the existing contestants.
These are his performances in Season 4. Singing is more nuanced now, not so 'howling'.
Can't wait to buy his album. I just hope they don't over-polish him so he loses his characteristics, like what happened to 杨宗纬 :(((
She is one of the judges in my favourite talent competition 超级星光大道 One Million Star, and one very talented lady. I like her calm and nurturing disposition, as well as her forte in composing and harmonising.
I am in awe that she can create such moving compositions working with just super short lyrics. Although I wouldn't label her as a good singer haha. Mostly she completes both lyrics and melody herself.
This is the first song of hers that I have an impression of. Very meaningful lyrics.
This next song is a classic of hers which reflected her thoughts at the time of her divorce. Very simple, yet heart-wrenching.
"改变“
街上的行人匆匆忙忙 此刻的画面是无声的世界
我故意装作不在乎 不在乎你和她的一切
我失去了你这是一开始就知道的剧情 我失去了你也失去过去拥有的回忆 这样的改变你怎麽从来不知道
This last song, I would think, is her most famous tune. The theme song from the movie "心动" Tempting Heart. Lyrics by 林夕, who did most of Faye Wong's songs. I feel that the song matches the movie extremely, extremely well.
Super tear-jerker movie about growing pains! I dare you to watch the movie and tell me you didn't shed a tear. Great directing by Sylvia Chang, and I believe, best acting ever by Takeshi Kaneshiro ;) Really hated Karen Mok's bitchy character in the show.
I never liked 品冠 Victor Huang's singing. I find it very clinical and emotionless. Have been feeling disgruntled over this for some time, and am compelled to write about it today because once again, I heard this song on the radio and felt so unjust for the original version.
Why do a cover version of a song if you cannot improve on the original? And he has been churning out albums based just on cover versions. URGH!!!
Here is the original by Malaysian group Baby.
This is the version where 品冠 kills the song. Totally does not convey the feel of the lyrics.
Decided to change my 'soundtrack' so that it's not so religious haha. The new song also reflects my current mood.
范逸臣 Van Fan's "国境之南" is from the soundtrack of his movie "海角七号" Cape No.7. It was a nice story, but spoilt due to the very bad acting by the female Japanese lead, as well as a totally not believable love story between the leads.
But I like the feel of this song. It's very acoustic and uses traditional instruments, totally bringing out the mood of listening to it 'live' at night, by the sea, as the waves wash shore.
That's my mood nowadays: Rather neutral and peaceful, as I await Boy Boy's arrival... but also a bit of anticipation and a bit of apprehension. But leaving everything to fate and seeing how it goes :)
Don't know why my PILs and Dad complain that this show is not interesting at all. My MIL says that this is a super old drama... Erm I tried to tell her that it is intentionally nostalgic haha. Luckily my Mum agrees with me that it's a nice show!
My Mum watches for Liza Wang :) I don't really like Liza Wang's face, but apparently she's been around long enough to earn her stripes, so I should give her some credit for being as experienced an artiste as she is.
The theme song. I was looking for the episode where the 3 aunties reunited to perform on TV, it was so nice. But can't find :(
东方之珠
This is the ending song for the drama, a song that talks about the mother-and-son bond. SPOILER ALERT!!!
Heard this song on the HK drama 东方之珠 "Glittering Days" yesterday and it got stuck in my head.
The scene was very touching because the singer was dying of cancer and trying to record this final song to her album before she died. She would also be leaving behind a son. I guess, the fact that I can find this first video on Youtube means others also found this moving.
This version is by the original singer 尤雅, unfortunately, a KTV version.
A lot has been said by everyone since he passed away, so I shall not join in and wax lyrical about how great a legend he was.
Feel a pity and sad for him because he was a talented boy who grew up too fast and spiralled down too soon. Imagine the kind of life he had to lead because everyone was staring at him.
Would like to share his Thriller video with you. I remember being 5 years old in 1982 and being awed and fascinated by this dancing werewolf on TV. Very very deep impression.
The full-length (almost 14 mins) video is here if you're interested.
My very 1st idol! Also because the same best friend intro-ed them to me. Their "红蜻蜓" cassette was the 1st Mandarin album I ever bought. Sorry for avalanche of Youtube videos ;)
Their 1st album - 青蘋果樂園
逍遙遊
新年快樂 - with 憂歡派對
My Sec 3 class performed this for CNY concert!
紅蜻蜓
叫你一聲MY LOVE
蝴蝶飛呀
I actually auditioned using this song, for the 安培那 singing competition with my best friend and another classmate. With matching outfits and coordinated gestures of course ;) It was a horrible failure, but so fun!!!
This is my new favourite song. I find the lyrics very cinematic and they really conjure up the vision of wandering around at night, getting in touch with yourself amidst the bustling of the big city.
I'm a big Cheer Chen fan; I think her compositions are of high quality and aim to reach that someday, especially w.r.t. her Mandarin lyrics.
Cheer Chen Fish
I sit on a chair Watch the sunrise resurrect I sit in the dusk Watch the city age I pick off a leaf Let it replace me To observe the changes after I leave
Once I ran, I danced I spoke greedily Decomposing with the Cold, wet heart
* What cannot be taken or abandoned Let the rain eat into Let it push me to the edge Struggling without a care
If there's an embrace Brave and uncalculative Don't let me fly Coop me gently
What cannot be taken or retained I hand over to it Let it hold me in its palm To scatter freely
If there's a world So outrageously mixed up Forgive me for flying Once in love with the sun
Excuse me, who wouldn't be 冲动 when faced with Jang Hyuk?!!! Hee hee.
My favourite Korean actor. But I still wouldn't pay to watch him in Dance of the Dragon, cos it's too gross to see him fighting for Fann Wong -_-".
Elva is much better. I just wish she would stop doing her Rexona let-me-show-you-my-armpit pose.
I saw a 'making of' special and apparently Jang Hyuk is her real idol. She was so paisey cos she couldn't stop giggling like a schoolgirl when filming this video with him, ending up creating a lot of NGs.
I love 黄韵玲's compositions, they are often short but very powerful. Listen to this song <改变>, just 8 lines of lyrics! She wrote this for an ex. Can't deny the punch it packs.
My friend Dunhong just released his album after 3 years of saving up for it. Although it can be more polished, I support his effort just because he surprised me with his perseverance. Knew him more than 10 years ago in a xinyao songwriting camp. I always liked his voice, but we sort of just lost contact along the way as there became less things in common.
Check him out: http://www.iamyet.net He's a full-time social worker and married, so that makes his perseverance even more respectable.
Ok now I feel so slack. What have I been doing on music, while he had been striving so hard? Yes, it's not my career choice, but somehow, I always feel that I can do more in this area, even as a hobby. Gosh. Need to start writing again.
BTW, here is my first 'piano', which I bought from Popular's kid section. Still lovingly hand-sewed a cloth cover for it. Brought it to the above-mentioned xinyao camp while others brought guitars and synthesizers. Hahaaa!!! Whatever. Just something to help me write the notes down ;)
This 卢广仲 guy's now so famous amongst Taiwanese youth. He's actually a newcomer and has his own songwriting album. Cool hair, specs, high socks and tailored shorts! Luckily he has a kuso image.. cos he's quite ugly ;) But I think it's nice that some of his songs make the listener feel happy :)
I attended the Spop Hurray Gala at the indoor stadium last night as my friend had an extra ticket.
I have to admit that I went mainly to see 蕭敬騰 in action. I wanted to see how powerful his voice really is 'live', having watched him on 星光. My friend went mainly to see Elva Hsiao in action hee hee. What a pair of unpatriotic Singaporeans we were!
I was blown away by his powerful voice, which literally cascaded over us wave after wave, although we were sitting at mid-level seats. Very shiok! My friend is now a convert hee hee.
Have to applaud the organisers for the line-up of performers that night; they had to either sing Singaporean-composed songs, or self-penned items. That was meaningful as it was a night to celebrate original music. I also loved the segment where Chen Weilian and Shi Xinhui sang my favourite xinyao duets 邂逅, 关于爱情 and 你的倒影.
What was not cool though, was... a lot:
(1) What was with the wardrobe and styling of our xinyao singers? Pan Ying was decked out in auntie hair and voluminous gown belonging to the 80s, and her thickly drawn eyebrows looked like they had never been erased since then. Ditto for Hong Shaoxuan's suit. Did Mediacorp not have enough money to provide a crew for these pioneers?
(2) Hosts Cuifang and 93.3FM deejay Peifen interviewed ex-SBC singers at the VIP seats. The supers went up on the screen as "Ex-SBC Singers", without displaying the names of those being interviewed. We saw Peter Chen (who had remained in the limelight so we were familiar with him) and a Mr Ye (who I luckily still remember is called Ye Zhen Wen). And four ladies, all whom were not introduced at all to the audience. At one point Peifen even looked directly at one of them as called her "这位小姐".
How disrespectful! It shows that the hosts did not do their homework, and that the organisers were more interested to sell their new finds rather than salute those who were no longer of financial value to them.
(3) Winner of the songwriting competition was a Malaysian. The song was rubbishy, the typical type that teenagers would write. Think 杨丞琳 or the earlier day 范晓萱. His competitor was a Singaporean, whose composition was mature and up to market standard. Of course, what should I have expected; the result was based on telephone voting. We all know who is more aggressive and willing to spend in that aspect.
Interestingly, a quick cruise through the Spop forum showed that people didn't even realise he was Malaysian until he let it slip during the concert. Hello, what's up organisers? Where's the 'S' in Spop now?
All in all... the event left a bitter taste in my mouth.
A new colleague has been playing muzak from his cubicle. Not the usual muzak, but instrumental versions of 1990s Chinese pop songs. Mostly melancholic, but very familiar and wonderful songs. Keeps making me gian for KTV! :O
Here are a few I found, do you still remember these songs? Their lyrics are so simple and meaningful.
